Let’s get to it!
I have come across the concept of Level 10 Life while searching for layout ideas for my bullet journal, a few years ago.
Because I found the concept fascinating, I ended up doing some research and I have found out that this brilliant method came from the mind of Hal Elrod, and is explained in detail in his book The Miracle Morning.
What is Level 10 Life?
In his book, Hal Elrod explains that if we were to measure success, fulfillment, and satisfaction in all areas of our lives, we would all want it to be level 10. He says he has never met anyone who said “Nah, I just want Level 7 health”.
In other words, a Level 10 Life is how your life would look loke if you were completely happy and accomplished in all areas of your life.
The concept is inclusive enough to be easily applied to everyone’s life, but since it is customizable to your own goals and expectations, your Level 10 Life is probably unique to you.
How do you create your Level 10 Life?
Your Level 10 Life starts when you correctly assess where you stand.
Once you have established where you are currently at in each of the 10 areas of your life, you can decide where you want to be.
Finally, you start setting your goals to reach the finish line.
What are the 10 life areas?
I will give you awesome suggestions later on. However, Hal Elrod proposed the following 10 areas:
It makes sense that a level 10 life encompasses 10 areas of your life with 10 layers each. You are free to adjust the concept to your own life.
- Personal Development
- Physical Environment
- Finance
- Career
- Romance
- Family and Friends
- Fun and Recreation
- Spirituality
- Giving and Contribution
- Health and Fitness
The process of creating your Level 10 Life.

Step 1: Set up your graph and evaluate.
Hal Elrod suggests a pie chart, divided into 10 equal sections. Each section divided into 10 layers.
You then assign one area of your life to each of the 10 sections. Finally, you decide on which level (layer) each area of your life is currently at.

Obviously there is no need to do an extremely elaborate pie chart. The beauty of this system is that you can customize everything to your needs.
Why not do a bar chart instead, as pictured above?
Step 2: Write down your goals.
After evaluating all areas of your life and determining at what level you are at, you are now ready to think about how your life would be like once you reached level 10, meaning once you were completely fulfilled in that area.
You can now work on your goals to keep improving and leveling up.

Step 3: Evaluate.
It is impossible to work on all 10 areas of your life at once. Try to focus on one or two areas at the same time and once you have reached your goal, move on to other areas or you can easily become frustrated.
Additionally, you should work on leveling no more than two levels at a time to keep seeing results, increasing your motivation.
This means you should come back to your chart at least once a year for a review and adjustment of goals, as well as make any changes you see fit.
The fun part about life is that it is never static!

The 10 Areas of Level 10 Life
As I mentioned above, you should divide your life into 10 main areas and set your goals in order to develop each area individually. Next, I will dig a little deeper into each area and suggest a few examples of goals, to get you started.
1. Personal development
According to Hal Elrod, the road to success starts with personal development. After all, you need to become the person you need to be to achieve your goals and live your ideal life.
Think of what is stopping you from accomplishing everything you want in life.

Here are some possible goals you might have to start working on your personal development:
- Practice self-awareness;
- Identify your limiting beliefs;
- Write a letter to your future self.
- Identify your limiting triggers.
- Read 15 minutes daily.
2. Physical Environment
Did you know that what you surround yourself with impacts both your physical and your mental health?
A clean and organized home can increase your focus, your motivation, and you overall mood, while decreasing your stress and anxiety levels, promoting a feeling of calmness and well-being.
Think of what is messy or cluttered around you and start improving your space by organizing your home.

3. Finance
Money does not have to be a pain point in your life. Think about what is stopping you from achieving your level 10 in the Finance area.
Maybe you have debt. Maybe you just don’t earn enough. Or maybe you just want to start saving.

In the meantime, here are some goal examples you can add to your Finance section:
- Grow your income by 10%;
- Save 10% of your salary;
- Start investing;
- Track your spending habits;
- Eliminate debt.
4. Career
We spend more time at work than ever before and still we find ourselves in unfulfilling jobs, feeling miserable and out of place. And you know what? It is no one else’s fault but our own.
What is really stopping you from having the career of your dreams? Think about what would make you happy in your career and plan accordingly.
Take a look at the following examples of career improving goals you might want to consider:
- Get a certification or a diploma;
- Switch your field entirely and learn new skills;
- Connect with people on your field, LinkedIn is an awesome networking tool;
- Apply for job opportunities;
- Ask for a raise.
5. Romance
Whether you are in a serious relationship or not, you can agree that romance is a very specific part of our lives.
Think about where you are right now and what are your plans for the future. Does your significant other match those plans? Can you grow together? Or would you rather not have to depend on anyone else and live a solitary life?
It is entirely up to you, just remember to set your goals according to your dreams.
Here are a few examples of how you can improve the romance in your life, whether you are in a relationship with yourself or your significant other:
- Have mindful conversations with your partner;
- Start a tradition together;
- Have movie nights at home;
- Randomly remind them how much they mean to you;
- Take a ‘just us’ day.
6. Family and Friends
Whether you like it or not (hello, fellow introverts!), humans are social creatures, which is why maintaining good and healthy relationships with your social circle is vital to your overall happiness.
Think about what you can do to improve your connections with the people you love. How can you help them? Keep it selfless, without expecting anything in return.
Remember to surround yourself with people who will motivate you to improve and be better every day. This does not only mean your existing relationships, but also working on creating new ones.
Here are a few examples on how you can create long-term, meaningful relationships with your loved ones:
- Call your grandparents weekly;
- Go to networking events to connect with like-minded people;
- Reach out to your friends;
- Set a recurring friend date night;
- Visit your family outside of holiday season as well.
7. Fun and Recreation
How can your life ever be a level 10 life if you do not have fun with it? Improve your ‘me’ time with activities that bring happiness to both your mind and your soul.
In need of a few examples? Here they are:
- Learn a new hobby;
- Start a bucket list;
- Travel more often;
- Go to a music festival;
- Try out a new restaurant/bar every month.
8. Spirituality
You should work on your spirituality even if you are not a religious person, because spirituality does not only involve religion. It is something very personal and different to each and every one of us and it is about connecting with something outside of our shell.
Here are a few examples:
- Meditate for 10 minutes every day;
- Do random acts of kindness;
- Reflect on your day, your week, your month;
- Practice gratitude;
- Walk barefoot in the nature and sit quietly while soaking it all in.
9. Giving and Contribution
Charity might be insignificant for you, but it could mean the world to who you have just helped. Think of ways in which you can positively touch the lives of people in need.
When we think of charity, the first thing that comes to mind is a money donation. If you can manage that, by all means, pick a charity and donate.
However, if you are struggling financially, here are a few examples of giving and contributing that do not involve money:
- Donate old clothes/shoes in good condition that you don’t wear anymore;
- Do some volunteer work;
- Support a small business owner;
- Donate unperishable foods to the food bank;
- Donate blankets and food bowls and accessories to animal shelters.
10. Health and Fitness
I am sure it comes as no surprise that health is the most important part of our lives. Without health, everything loses it’s meaning.
Being healthy is not about spending your entire day at the gym. Being healthy means treating your body with the nutrients and water it needs to fuel itself while keeping your muscles and joints active, to prevent decay.
